Zinc Oxide Sunscreen
Zinc oxide is one of the most widely used and well-understood active ingredients in modern sunscreens. As a mineral UV filter, it works by sitting on the surface of the skin to reflect, absorb and scatter both UVA and UVB rays, providing broad-spectrum protection.
Global Regulatory Consensus
Regulators around the world have consistently approved zinc oxide for use in sunscreens due to its strong safety profile and proven effectiveness.

United States (FDA): Zinc oxide is classified as GRASE (Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective). It is only broad-spectrum UV filter that the FDA has sufficient safety data to support a GRASE determination. It is approved at concentrations up to 25%.

European Union: Zinc oxide is approved as a UV filter under the Cosmetics Regulation at a maximum concentration of 25% in both non-nano and nano forms (with specific conditions for nano forms).

Australia (TGA): Zinc oxide is permitted for use in therapeutic sunscreens. Like other major regulators, Australian authorities recognise its safety when used as directed.

It is naturally present in the environment, including in oceans, where it functions as an essential nutrient for marine ecosystems.Because zinc oxide is derived from this naturally occurring element, it offers a different safety and environmental profile compared to many synthetic chemical UV filters.
Particle Size and Safety Considerations
The most common and widely recommended form of zinc oxide used in sunscreens is the non-nano (larger particle size) form. Non-nano zinc oxide sits on top of the skin rather than being absorbed, which contributes to its excellent safety record. Environmental and health experts generally prefer non-nano mineral filters for this reason, as they minimise concerns about systemic absorption while still delivering effective broad-spectrum UV protection.
